Session Description: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the leading not-for-profit organization responsible for the creation of standards overseeing physician and medical specialist certification in the United States. The 24 ABMS Member Boards’ leadership and public members develop professional standards and programs of assessment to certify physicians and medical specialists. More than 985,000 physicians and medical specialists are currently certified by one or more of the ABMS Member Boards in one or more of the 40 specialties and 89 subspecialties.
This session will provide a comprehensive review of several initiatives focused on enhancing the value of certification, as well as discuss some of the external influences on board certification. The review will include information on new campaigns designed to enhance support for the value of board certification, as well as improved access to certification information and analytics. In addition, we will review the current legislative environment at the state and federal level, information about physician profiles and how to read them, and where the boards’ programs may differ.

Discuss the value of ABMS Board Certification and the Member Boards assessment programs.
Ensure a clear understanding of the diplomate profile and how the Member Boards vary in their interpretation and display of some elements of their continuing certification programs.
